About Us

The Sikh Council of Africa (SCOA) is a society of Sikh places of worship and organisations which confess the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (SGGSji) is the Guru of Sikhs, and therefore seek to fulfil the common calling that all Sikhs shall see and treat SGGSji as their only Guru.

Under the guidance of SGGSji the SCOA is an instrument and servant of the Sikh places of worship in Africa, committed to stimulating and effecting fellowship, co-operation and unity among its members and all other Sikhs in their common mission in the world.

The work of the SCOA is based on the recognition of SGGSji as the divine head of the Sikh faith.

Our Mission

The mission of the Sikh Council of Africa (SCOA) is to provide a common platform for uniting the Sikh community in its pursuit of the religions educational, economic and social well-being, practice and propagation promoting intra-faith cohesion and interfaith cooperation, harnessing spiritual and secular values for common good, seeking world peace and harmony, to protect its heritage and the right of religious freedom.

Aims And Objectives

  1. To represent the collective, collaborative and cohesive voice of Sikhs on international issues related to humanity and Sikhi in Africa.
  2. To practice and promote Sikh solidarity and Sikh Dharam across Africa.
  3. To represent the Sikh community of Africa at the African Union Interfaith   Dialogue Forum (AUIDF) and other interfaith bodies and program of Africa.
  4. To actively engage in and help in the process of promoting interfaith harmony and peaceful co-existence among followers of different religions and faith traditions of Africa through constructive dialogue
  5.  To participate in the common position of African Religious Leaders on post 2015 Global Sustainable Development Goals.
  6.  To promote and inculcate a culture of peace-building through fostering forgiveness and reconciliation.
  7.  To establish working partnerships with other indigenous religious traditions in Africa to enhance the effort of the preservation of the environment and to address the issue of countering violent extremism, radicalization and climate change in Africa
  8. The Society has non-political objectives.
  9. The Society shall be compliant with the “Maryada” (Codes of Practice) as prescribed by the Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
  10. To safeguard the rights of Sikhs to adorn the Baptismal symbols (the 5ks) and the turban.  To promote respect of the Sikh faith and its customs.
  11. To endeavour to promote gender equality, empower women in order to uplift their position in the society.
  12. To empower youth and promote stable family values in conjunction with social, ethical and moral values.
  13. To receive or administer funds from or through any agency and also to raise funds through borrowing and loans with the approval of the executive Committee and administer the same according to the law, to further the interest of the Society, in pursuance to the objects to receive and give charitable donations whatsoever and whenever.
  14. Assist the public (without reference to caste, creed or colour) which includes poverty relief, educational assistance, disaster/calamities relief and the advancement of welfare and any other objective of general public utility.
  15. Managing, administrating, maintaining, purchasing, mortgaging, selling, letting out any of its moveable property (ies) and to utilise the rent and/ or sale proceeds thereof for meeting the objectives of the Society.
  16. Provided that all the objects stated above shall be carried out in Africa or elsewhere, without any restrictions to caste, community or colour and that no object shall be carried on with the purpose of making any profit and it is also hereby declares that the Society fund shall not be utilised for the benefit of any member of the governing body of the Society or any other person who has made substantial contribution to the Society for any other purpose other than the objects of the Society.
